AQUA CHI YOGA
(Off Campus at Willow Stream Spa, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn)

This class meets at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn Willow Stream Spa. Movement and postures are sequenced to maximize benefits of being "warmed to the bone." Raja Yoga inspired meditative and mindfulness practices are a strong theme. Speaking of strong, don't let the gentle, soothing and weightless feel make you think your body is not working. Floating in high content magnesium water gives the impression of complete ease. Yet your abs (and other muscles) engage while you enjoy. Your spine will indulge in relieving traction. Your nervous system will be going to "vagus." Asana (postures) and Tai Chi'ish movements are gentle and Susi often offers amplifying options. The entire body responds in gratitude to this practice. SAVASANA is a heavenly float with or without noodles and the option of listening to underwater music and mystical sea life calls. You are left to float your Savasana for a bit after class if you like. The authentic mineral rich geothermal deep spring waters leech toxins, therefore drinking lots of water afterwards helps maximize the cleansing effects.

FEEL GOOD YOGA
Hatha yoga is the most commonly practiced branch of yoga in America, and it is a highly developed system of nearly 200 physical postures, movements and breathing techniques designed to tune the body to its optimal health. The yoga philosophy believes the breath to be the most important facet of health, as the breath is the largest source of prana, or life force, and hatha yoga utilizes pranayama, which literally means the science or control of breathing. Hatha yoga was originally developed as a system to make the body strong and healthy enough to enable mental awareness and spiritual enlightenment. A “flow” class simply means that postures are strung together without much interruption or breaks between postures.

FLUID RAJA YOGA
Fluid Raja Yoga is an uninterrupted practice set to music that combines mindful transitions between postures and coordination of breath with movement, which elicits a quieting of the mind and a relaxation response in the nervous system. Participants gauge their responses and make adjustments through verbal cues and awareness of body, breath and thought patterns.

GENTLE YOGA AND YOGA NIDRA
Enjoy a slow-paced class that will leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed. Gentle Yoga classes are appropriate for those who are dealing with illness, injury, an aging body or just a low energy day. Appropriate for beginners as well.

Yoga Nidra (translates to Yogic Sleep) is a delicious guided relaxation done while lying on your mat.  This form of yoga is known to promote sleep and release tension, anxiety, awareness, and, possibly, heal psychological wounds.

HATHA / HATHA FLOW / MORNING HATHA FLOW / SOFT FLOW
Hatha yoga is the most commonly practiced branch of yoga in America, and it is a highly developed system of nearly 200 physical postures, movements and breathing techniques designed to tune the body to its optimal health. A "flow" class simply means that postures are strung together without much interruption or breaks between postures.

INTEGRATED HATHA YOGA
A gentle fluid Asana class in the Raja Yoga tradition, focused on connecting breath with movement. Emphases will be on postures for healthy aging. Variations are presented with guidance to modify or amplify based on your body’s inner wisdom. MEDITATION
The most ancient texts associated with yoga outline clear and practical ways to improve the functioning of the mind and provide a roadmap to a more enjoyable and peaceful life.  In this class we explore ancient yoga philosophy and the inner practices of yoga and meditation, alongside modern concepts of neuroscience and psychology.  The class is designed to introduce students to transformational practices and information through lecture and practicum.  Students may sit in a chair or on the ground.

MYSORE PRACTICE
Mysore style of practice received its named because Ashtanga yoga was taught this way by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, in Mysore, India. In a Mysore practice, the student is taught a sequence of postures, with correct movement, breathing and drishti, gradually through one-on-one instruction. This method allows students to practice independently, memorize the sequence and gain proficiency at their individual pace. In time postures are added to complete a series. In class students are surrounded by the energy and inspiration of others in the room. The teachers role is to work with new students individually, at first newer students require more attention. As students become proficient in their practice, they are allowed more independence, receiving adjustments and assistance only when required.

*It is highly recommended to observe a class before attending a session. Students are welcome to drop in at any time. If coming to observe please remove your shoes, enter the space quietly and take a seat on the benches.

*New students attending class should arrive at 7am when specific instructions on beginning a Mysore practice will be given.

PILATES FOR YOGIS
An ideal class for yogis who want to ease into Pilates. Strengthening torso muscles in the front, sides and back, as well as deep in the pelvis and hips, Pilates requires proper breathing, concentration, precision and control, and will improve and enhance posture and alignment. In this all-level class, modifications and easier versions of exercises are always available.

PRE-NATAL
Prenatal yoga class incorporates relaxation exercises, breath-work, birth positions, remedies for common discomforts, key pregnancy exercises like squats and kegels, positions to encourage optimal fetal positioning, and much more for mothers and their babies.

QIGONG
'Qi' or 'Chi' means life energy. In Yoga, it is called 'Prana'. 'Gong' or 'Kung' means work or cultivate. Therefore, qigong means working with or cultivating your life energy. I like to think of it as a practice of developing a relationship with your life energy. It is a 5,000-year-old Chinese practice that has both endured the test of time and is making a tremendous resurgence during the present time. The benefits of qigong are increasingly recognized for enhancing fitness in mind and body, developing vitality for sports and sex, and helping in the treatment of stress related disorders. It is also a powerful spiritual practice that opens one to states of flow and presence that extend into one's everyday life.

The main form that we will learn in this class is called Taiji Shibashi Qigong  (shibashi means 18 movements in Chinese). It is one of the most popular forms of Qigong in the world. It was developed by Professor Lin Hou-Sheng in 1979. Professor Lin is a renowned Qigong Master, scientist and Master Healer. In 1980 he developed a technique for successfully using qigong as the only anesthesia needed in surgical operations: no anesthetics, no acupuncture needles just "qi" energy. His scientific studies on qigong healing have been published in the prestigious journal Nature (Vol. 275,1978). Tai Chi Shibashi Qigong is based on the philosophy of Tai Chi and extracts some of the best movements from the Yang style Tai Chi Chuan. It places emphasis on synchronizing the 18 movements with proper breathing and mindful attention. It is a gentle, beautiful and flowing qigong exercise routine that is both a joy to do and deeply relaxing.

This qigong form is designed to improve the general health and wellbeing of the practitioner. The gentle rocking motions and stretching movements improve circulation and digestion. The chest exercises and controlled breathing are good for lung conditions and asthma. And the overall effect of the exercise is to reduce mental stress and physical tension carried in the muscles of the body. This form of qigong is very effective, easy to learn, and is practiced around the world.

RAJA YIN YOGA
The longer holds of Yin postures provide fertile ground for working with the mind, the classical hallmark of Raja yoga.  Taught in the original method of Yin Yoga as developed by Paul Grilley, passive asanas are held for 2-6 minutes in order to access and soften the connective tissue.  As the soft tissue releases, the body and mind is able to relax and let go of the patterns of holding on a deeper level.

RESTORATIVE YOGA
Soothe the mind, with a centering restorative practice. Together we will open the hips, side waists, hamstrings, and lower back to release deep-rooted tension. Modifications will be offered throughout this practice. Rest in the quiet moments between, as we allow space for meditation and pranayama.
